Electric Shuttle Service Launched in Downtown Miami for Free Rides: A New Way to Navigate the City

Downtown Miami streets are witnessing a green transformation with the introduction of a new, eco-friendly shuttle service. This initiative, aimed at enhancing the city’s public transport network, brings three electric shuttles to the heart of Miami, offering complimentary rides to residents and visitors alike.

Miami City Commissioner and Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority, Manolo Reyes, emphasizes the significance of this launch. “Our aim is to facilitate efficient transportation for as many people as possible. This service marks a promising beginning,” he remarks.

Exploring the Free Shuttle Service in Downtown Miami:

  • Partnership for Sustainable Mobility:

The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has collaborated with Freebee, a company specializing in electric-powered shuttles. These vehicles, accommodating up to five passengers, operate on a set route within the downtown business area. Key stops include the Miami-Dade County Government Center, the Kaseya Center, Biscayne Boulevard, the central Brightline train station, and four Metro mover stations.

  • Operational Hours:

The service is available seven days a week, with varying hours:

Monday to Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Accessing the Shuttles:

These shuttles, resembling extended golf carts, can be hailed on the street or requested via a mobile application. Freebee has previously operated in Key Biscayne and other cities such as Doral, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Hollywood, and Fort Lauderdale. “For tourists like me, this service is just perfect,” says Alex Paccini, a visitor from France. Commissioner Reyes anticipates that downtown locals and workers will greatly benefit, reducing the need for longer walks to bus stops or parking areas.

  • Enhancing Transit Connections:

This shuttle service coincides with Miami-Dade County’s initiative of offering free bus fares until the year’s end, as part of the Better Bus Network’s implementation. This new shuttle route complements existing municipal efforts to provide accessible, free or affordable transportation options within the city.

  • Expected Wait Times:

Commissioner Reyes is optimistic about reducing wait times through this pilot program. The target is a maximum wait time of 10 to 15 minutes. However, initial experiences indicate some delays. For instance, a CBS News Miami team experienced a 28-minute wait for a pickup, prompting Reyes to acknowledge the need for adjustments. “We’re gathering feedback and will make necessary tweaks to optimize efficiency,” he asserts.
